Abstract

Shi'ites and Iran are two different entities. The word Shi'ites refers to Muslims who adhere to Shi'ism. Meanwhile, Iran is the name of the modern shape of Persia, located in what region the western political powers geopolitically termed the Middle East. Even so, in the frame of academic discussion of politics (especially in the field of International Relations), both still cannot be separated. Less or more, everything about Iran will be related to Shi'ism, and usually, everything about Shi'ism (and Shi'ites movements) is (considered to) Iran's national interest. If both can be equated to humans, then Shi'ism and Shi'ites are the souls, while Iran is the body. Thus, it is still not wise to consider the two as separate entities by looking out at the situations. After the 1979 revolution driven by Shia clerics, the Persian empire collapsed. The 1979 revolution brought Iran to the pinnacle of world authority. Wilāyat al-Faqīh, the theory of government the nation espoused, almost made Iran a complete superpower, at least in domains the country mastered. The main reason lies in Wilāyat al-Faqīh, where it was constructed on several Shia principal religious doctrines. So thus how Shi'ites feel obliged to follow every movement initiated by the government of that country - even if they do not believe in it. One example of Iran's success in mobilizing the global community is World Quds Day, a social movement initiated by Khomeini in 1979 in order to voice condemnation of the annexation of the city of Jerusalem by Israel from the hands of the Palestinians, or more broadly, as an effort to call for independence for Palestine from Israeli occupation. The movement is still commemorated every Friday in the last week of Ramadan in nearly ninety countries worldwide, both in the northern tip of the Americas to the east and south of Asia. While what is precisely considered communication is delivering ideas from one to others, influencing has become a part of communication as one of its purposes is shaping people's preferences, with the question like: "how to make people be in favor of the suggester," must be answered by: "that the influencer must first master the human living aspects both in the matter of ideal or material things, such as constructing or committing to a value (brand-building) and holding a public discussion." Thus, by studying the history and reality of World Quds Day's commemoration in Indonesia with the support of several approaches the writer applied, this study tries to find and understand the theoretical construction of Wilāyat al-Faqīh and its relations with Shia Muslims, the contemporary ontology of the 1979 Iranian revolution's exportation and its significance toward Shi'ites nowadays, which the thirds ultimately aims to reveal Iran's strategic approach in influencing Shia Muslims worldwide to participate in socio-political movements initiated by the country.
