Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to optimize cutting parameters to improve productivity and tool life of CNMG 160612 inserts while reducing tooling costs in the roughing turning process of BT1882 brake drums at PT Bakrie Autoparts. The parameters investigated were cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut. Productivity was evaluated using Material Removal Rate (MRR), while tool life was determined based on the number of components produced until the flank wear reached VB = 0.30 mm. The Taguchi method was applied using an L9 (3³) Orthogonal Array, Signal-to-Noise Ratio (S/N Ratio), Response Table, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results showed that feed rate was the most dominant factor and significantly affected tool life, with a P-Value of 0.022. Cutting speed had a near-significant effect with a P-Value of 0.059, while depth of cut was not significant with a P-Value of 0.503. The optimum parameter combination based on the Taguchi method was a cutting speed of 150 m/min, a feed rate of 0.15 mm/rev, and a depth of cut of 1.0 mm. This condition resulted in a tool life of 9.81 minutes or 30 brake drum components per insert, an MRR of 22.50 cm³/min, and a tooling cost of IDR 3,533/component. Compared with the existing tooling cost of IDR 5,300/component, the optimum parameters reduced tooling costs by IDR 1,767/component or 33.34%. The operational sweet spot was obtained at a cutting speed of 250 m/min, a feed rate of 0.15 mm/rev, and a depth of cut of 2.0 mm, resulting in an MRR of 75 cm³/min and a tooling cost of IDR 4,818/component, representing a 9.09% reduction from the existing condition.
