Abstract
The sequential use of multiple cutting tools in the brake drum milling process at PT Bakrie Autoparts increases tool change frequency, leading to high non-productive time (idle time) and elevated machining costs. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of applying a special tool (which integrates Ø11mm drilling, Ø24mm spot facing, and 45° chamfering functions) in terms of product dimensional quality, as well as its impact on operational and economic efficiency. This quantitative research adopts a before-after comparative experimental design with 30 sample observations for each condition (before using 3 separate tools and after using 1 special tool). Statistical hypothesis testing was conducted using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test at a 5% significance level, along with Fisher's exact test to evaluate the in-spec rate. The methods (p-value >0.05) statistical results indicated no significant difference in dimensional quality between the two methods (while the in-spec rate showed a descriptive improvement from 96.67% (29/30 OK) to 100% (30/30 OK). The implementation of the special tool successfully eliminated 30 seconds of tool change time per cycle, reducing cycle time by 18.52% (from 162 seconds to 132 seconds) and increasing productivity by 22.73% (from 22.22 pcs/hour to 27.27 pcs/hour). Economically, the machine cost per part decreased by 18.52% (from IDR 3,740 to IDR 3,047) and the tooling cost per part decreased by 64.39% (from IDR 8,270 to IDR 2,945), achieving a total machining cost savings of 50.11% (from IDR 12,010 to IDR 5,992 per part). In conclusion, the application of the special tool is proven feasible as it maintains product dimensional quality according to standards while significantly enhancing operational and economic efficiency
