Abstract

The melukat ritual is a self-purification ceremony using holy water, traditionally performed by Hindus from generation to generation. Today, the melukat ritual has become a popular wellness tourism attraction among both local and international visitors. This research aims to understand the meaning of participating in the melukat ritual from both a traditional and an attraction perspective, using in-depth interviews with participants from two social groups: the Balinese (Hindus) and non-Hindu tourists. The findings reveal differences in certain aspects of the melukat process as practiced by Hindus and as a tourist attraction. Nevertheless, the melukat ritual serves the same purpose for both groups and can be performed by anyone. Implementing self-categorized theory in the context of melukat ritual tourism in Bali provides insights into how self-categorization and social identity influence the experiences of tourists involved in this ritual. Tourists interested in the melukat ritual may view themselves as part of a group that values Balinese culture and spirituality, and therefore, are more likely to participate respectfully in the local traditions. Meanwhile, the Balinese themselves feel more connected to the melukat ritual as they see themselves as part of a shared cultural and religious group. From a wellness tourism perspective, the melukat ritual impacts five dimensions: physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual. Tourists can experience comprehensive and authentic wellness benefits. This implementation not only enhances the wellness experience but also respects and preserves local cultural traditions.
