Abstract
PT X has two liquid ethane storage tanks, each with a capacity of 160 m³, and a minimum inventory of 60 m³. These storage tanks operate by controlling the pressure within the tanks using a control valve. PT X has experienced a decrease in the amount of liquid ethane product due to a reduction in the amount of feed gas entering the refinery and changes in the composition of the gas, which now contains less ethane. This situation has raised concerns regarding the operational conditions of the refinery, as it may lead to startup process failures. Therefore, a risk analysis was conducted using the FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) method to identify and evaluate potential failure modes and their impact on the ethane storage system. The research revealed that the most significant failure factor is the failure of the control valve regulating the pressure in the storage tanks. It was then proposed to mitigate this risk by increasing the equilibrium point of liquid ethane in the bullet storage from 29 Kg/cm² to 34.8 Kg/cm². By adjusting this equilibrium point, it is expected that the operating point of ethane will move further away from the saturated point, thereby allowing the ethane level to be established. With this proposed control measure, it is hoped that PT. X Bontang will have better guidance in managing the operational risks of the ethane storage system more efficiently and safely, thus preventing unwanted losses.
