Abstract

This study aims to analyze the function of the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) ideology in shaping Taiwan's foreign policy under the Tsai Ing-Wen administration (2016-2024). Employing a constructivist paradigm, the research examines how the DPP’s political ideology—emphasizing Taiwanese sovereignty, democracy, and progressive values serves as a normative foundation and strategic guide in the formulation of foreign policy. The study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data are gathered through the analysis of official documents, public speeches, policy statements, and academic literature related to the DPP's ideology and Taiwan's foreign policy. The findings reveal that the DPP’s ideology plays a significant role in shaping the sociopolitical constructs of Tsai Ing-Wen’s administration, particularly in strengthening diplomatic relations with democratic countries, maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, and responding to political and military pressure from China.
