Abstract
Coal mining activities generate wastewater in the form of sediment runoff and acid mine drainage that have the potential to pollute the environment. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the WCP 03 settling pond at PT Telen Orbit Prima in reducing Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Iron (Fe), and Manganese (Mn) in mine wastewater, and to assess its compliance with KepMenLH No. 113 of 2003. Utilizing a descriptive and quantitative method through laboratory testing of water samples at the inlet and outlet points, this study compares the treatment performance during the wet and dry seasons. During the wet season with extreme rainfall, the initial pollutant load was extremely high (inlet TSS reaching 43,550 ppm and Fe 20.60 ppm). Under these conditions, the settling pond system optimized with chemical intervention (MegaFloc at 500 mg/L) proved highly effective in reducing TSS (99.96% reduction efficiency) to 19 ppm and Fe (99.03% reduction efficiency) to 0.20 ppm. Conversely, during the dry season, the initial pollutant load was significantly lower (inlet TSS 330 ppm and Fe 7.5 ppm), hence the natural gravitational settling process without chemical addition was sufficient to achieve a final effluent quality of 8 ppm for TSS and 0.10 ppm for Fe. The Mn parameter in both seasons did not experience a reduction; it instead slightly increased due to the phenomenon of sediment redissolution at the bottom of the pond. Nevertheless, the overall final wastewater effluent concentration remains safe, as all parameters are still well below the required environmental quality standards for discharge into water bodies.
