Abstract
Bioremediation has become an important method for restoration of oil polluted environment by use of indigenous or exogenous microbial. Several factors such as aeration, use of bulking agents and the type of microbial species play a major role in the remediation of oil-contaminated sites. Laboratory study was carried out on the bioremediation of soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbon at Terminal Senipah TotalFinaElf site, East Kalimantan. The major objective of this research was to find the appropriate environment conditions for enhancing petroleum hydrocarbon degradation. The effect of bulking agents and inoculation of extraneous microbial on bioremediation process were studied during 70 days in laboratory experiment. Polluted soil was treated with static ventilated biopile. Biopile was performance in laboratory scale ( 22 x 31 cm) using rice hulls, sawdust and grass as a bulking agents, NPK as inorganic nutrient and a bacterial consortium (indigenous or extraneous microbial). TPH concentrations were determinated by gravimetry and gas chromatography. Between 33, 27% to 69, 4 % of initial TPH were removed through biological process in. Decreasing of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) was the greatest at treatment of contaminated soil using rice hulls as the bulking agents and indigenous bacterial consortium, that up to 69,4% of Hydrocarbon contaminants were degredated during 70 days (from 38302 to 11720 mg HC (kg dry w)-1 Addition of the extraneous bacterial consortium insignificant enhanced the removal oil from soil.
