Abstract

The advancement of digital technology has influenced family communication patterns and potentially reduced the quality of face-to-face interaction, including the family dinner tradition. This study aims to analyze the role of family dinners in enhancing self-esteem by emphasizing interpersonal communication within pluralistic family types. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, the research involved four alumni of the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) University of Sussex and one family counselor as a triangulator, with data collected through in-depth interviews. The analysis reveals that the continuity of family dinner traditions is maintained through the family’s adaptive attitudes and tolerance toward busy schedules and physical distance, while technology functions as a complement that supports the sense of togetherness. Family dinners serve as an intensive dialogical space that reflects a pluralistic communication pattern characterized by democracy, openness, and freedom of choice, which positively contributes to the development of self-esteem. A key contribution of this study is the identification of specific dinner table topics, including daily life, academics, work, current issues, and emotional conditions, which are correlated with the self-esteem development of the alumni. In conclusion, the family dinner routine not only strengthens emotional bonds through interpersonal communication but also supports the psychological development of emerging adults, particularly in the aspect of self-esteem.
