Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a significant global health challenge in Indonesia, where hemodialysis (HD) is the most common renal replacement therapy. The success of this therapy is highly dependent on patient compliance, which is influenced by the quality of education provided by nurses. However, there are obstacles in the form of a lack of standardization of educational materials, dedicated time for patient education, low engagement between nurses and patients, and the long training time required for new nurses to become competent educators. This study aims to explore the application of the Design Thinking approach in creating innovative educational programs for nurses as hemodialysis patient educators. The Design Thinking methodology was chosen because of its human-centered and iterative nature in solving complex problems. Through the stages of empathy, problem definition, ideation, prototyping, and testing, this study seeks to design structured educational solutions to improve patient experience and HD service quality in the form of educational programs and the provision of handbooks for hemodialysis patient educator nurses. The results of this study are expected to provide practical contributions to hemodialysis service units in accelerating nurse competence and improving patient quality of life through more effective and empathetic education.
