Abstract
Kata Kunci: Resepsi, Generasi Z, Kekerasan Dalam Rumah Tangga ABSTRACT This research departs from the phenomenon of domestic violence (DV), which remains a serious problem in Indonesia. Data from Komnas Perempuan (2024) shows that cases of DV against women occupy the highest position compared to other forms of gender-based violence, indicating the urgency of this issue. Music, as one form of mass media, has the power to voice personal experiences as well as reflect social realities. The song “Ibu” by Pangalo! presents a narrative from a child’s perspective, portraying the suffering of a mother as a victim of domestic violence. This unique point of view makes the song particularly relevant to explore in terms of how young audiences interpret its message. The purpose of this study is to understand how Generation Z audiences interpret Pangalo!’s “Ibu” using Stuart Hall’s reception analysis theory. This research employs a qualitative method with a reception study approach. Primary data were obtained through in-depth interviews with four Generation Z informants, while secondary data consisted of literature on music, mass media, and domestic violence. The findings reveal that Generation Z audiences occupy three decoding positions as formulated by Hall: dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. In the dominant position, informants fully accepted the song’s message as a direct representation of DV. In the negotiated position, they connected the lyrics with personal experiences or social realities they observed. Meanwhile, in the oppositional position, informants rejected certain aspects, such as the musical style, which they considered too somber. This study concludes that “Ibu” functions not only as a musical work but also as a medium of social representation, raising awareness among younger generations regarding domestic violence.
