Abstract
DRAMATIZATION AND COMMODIFICATION OF SADNESS IN THE FILM "KETIKA BERHENTI DI SINI" ABSTRACT This study examines the dramatization and commodification of sadness in the Indonesian film "Ketika Berhenti di Sini" (2023), directed by Umay Shahab, which portrays loss and grief in an aesthetic and emotionally charged manner. The research aims to analyze why sad-themed narratives remain appealing in the Indonesian film industry, how sadness is dramatized in the film, and how that sadness is commodified. A qualitative approach was employed, combining Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic method (representamen, object, interpretant) with Vincent Mosco's concept of commodification (content, audience, and labor commodification). Primary data were drawn from the film itself, supported by a literature review and intertextual triangulation across the main text, comparable films, and reception/production texts (promotional materials, reviews, and social media responses). The findings show that the theme of sadness attracts audiences because it resonates with universal emotional experiences such as loss, separation, and nostalgia, thereby building viewer empathy. Sadness is dramatized through the climactic graveyard scene in which Dita cries at her father's grave, expressive body language, dark color tones, slow motion, emotional dialogue, flashbacks, and the theme song "Sorai." Commodification is found mainly in the form of content commodification (trailers, the tagline "Merayakan Kehilangan," and promotional clips of emotional scenes) and audience commodification (reaction videos, reviews, and shared emotional content on social media), while labor commodification could not be substantiated as a major empirical finding. The study concludes that dramatization and commodification are mutually reinforcing: sadness is constructed through cinematic signs and then repackaged and circulated within the media ecosystem, giving it emotional, cultural, and economic value.
