Abstract

Music has become an inseparable part of students' daily mobility, including while riding motorcycles to campus. On one hand, music offers emotional benefits such as comfort, mood regulation, and boredom relief during the ride. On the other hand, the use of in-ear audio devices such as earphones and True Wireless Stereo (TWS) may reduce riders' awareness of surrounding sounds, potentially creating safety risks. This condition may give rise to cognitive dissonance, a psychological tension arising from conflicting cognitive elements within an individual. This study aims to understand how students of Universitas Bakrie make sense of the tension between the emotional comfort of music and their awareness of riding safety risks, as well as how they respond to and make decisions about this habit. The study employed a qualitative approach with a Giorgi-based descriptive phenomenological design, involving six active students of Universitas Bakrie selected through purposive sampling and interviewed in depth. The findings show that all informants regarded music as an emotional need while riding, yet only some genuinely experienced cognitive dissonance. Three informants felt no internal conflict because they held strong justifications, while three others experienced dissonance of varying intensity triggered by near-miss incidents or reprimands from others. Their responses varied from behavioral compromise and self-justification to complete cessation of the habit. This study also proposes the concept of "muted dissonance" as an additional contribution to Festinger's cognitive dissonance theory.
