Abstract

This research is motivated by a viral phenomenon on TikTok showing an elementary school student named Tamara having her hair cleaned of lice by her teacher. In response to this phenomenon, YouTuber Baim Wong, through his YouTube channel Baim Paula, created a video by visiting Tamara's home to discuss the incident and explore the background of Tamara's family, who are living in poverty. Her mother works as a scavenger with minimal income, having to work from morning until night, which has led to a lack of attention to Tamara's hygiene and resulted in a lice infestation in her hair. This study employs a qualitative method with Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, analyzing meaning through denotation, connotation, and myth to identify signs of poverty in the Tamara video content on the Baim Paula YouTube channel. The research findings indicate that the poverty constructed through the meanings in the video content closely correlates with the criteria of poverty in Indonesia as defined by BPS and Law No. 13 of 2011. This study also reveals a correlation between poverty and sanitation.
