Abstract

This study examines the patriarchal culture in the television series "Gadis Kretek" by Kamila Andini, which premiered on Netflix in November 2023. The aim of this research is to understand the representation of patriarchal culture in the film through the main character, Dasiyah or Jeng Yah. The theory used is Roland Barthes' semiotics, which analyzes the meaning of denotative, connotative, and mythological signs. Denotative meaning is the original meaning of the sign, connotative meaning is the meaning shifted by the addition of certain feelings and values, while myth is the connotation that has long been formed in society as a product of the dominant social class. The research methodology employs semiotic analysis with a qualitative research type. Data is collected through documentation and literature study. The analysis shows there are 9 scenes in the film "Gadis Kretek" that represent patriarchal culture in Indonesia, particularly Javanese customs. This representation illustrates that men hold higher power, women have no right to choose their jobs, are considered weak, can only cook, dress up, bear children, and must submit to men. Women are also not free to determine their lives, especially in choosing a spouse. This research suggests that other researchers develop studies on the representation of patriarchal culture in other subjects, as well as discuss other representations in the film "Gadis Kretek" such as gender inequality, forced marriage, or the moral messages contained.
